Kerf Tool

Kerf is the tiny bit of extra material that is burned off by the width of the laser.

In order for the 2 pieces to fit together snuggly, you will need to measure the thickness of your backing and then make sure the slot in the base is approximately 0.01" thinner. Sheets of wood and acrylic are rarely exactly 1/8" thick.

Use this tool to help you determine your slot size. Find the gap that your material fits snuggly into and use that measurement as the slot size.
