## Tapatan - Achi

## 3-Token Version - Tapatan

In this variation, each player has only three tokens, making the game mathematically identical to the game Tapatan.

- **Placement Phase:** Players take turns placing their tokens on any empty intersection of the board.

- **Winning Early:** If a player creates a 3-in-a-row during the placement phase, they win immediately.

- **Movement Phase:** If all pieces are placed and no one has won, players take turns sliding one of their tokens along a line to an adjacent empty intersection.

- **Winning in Movement:** The first player to align 3-in-a-row while sliding their pieces wins.

## 4-Token Version - Achi

This is the most common version of Achi. Each player gets four tokens, which creates a longer game with a strategy similar to Tic-Tac-Toe.

- **Placement (Drop) Phase:** Players take turns dropping their four pieces, one at a time, onto any of the 9 line intersections.

- **Winning Early:** If three of your tokens align in a row during this placement phase, you win immediately.

- **Movement (Slide) Phase:** After all 8 pieces are on the board (leaving exactly 1 empty space), players take turns sliding one of their pieces along the lines to an adjacent empty spot. Pieces cannot jump over each other.

- **Winning in Movement:** The first player to slide their tokens into a 3-in-a-row alignment wins the game.

## Rule Variations

Before beginning either version, players can mutually agree to these popular rule variants:

- **Jump Phase:** In the movement phase, you can jump over an adjacent piece into the empty space directly beyond it (the jumped piece remains on the board).

- **Center Requirement:** To win, the 3-in-a-row must include the center space of the board.

- **Directional Limits:** The win condition is restricted to only horizontal or vertical rows, excluding diagonal lines.
