A Clever Little Detail: Auto Balance

Ever notice how an ornament with a hanging hole in the middle doesn't always hang straight?

That's because the geometric center isn't necessarily the balance point.

This truck is a perfect example. The Christmas tree and uneven silhouette shift the weight toward one side.

The template includes a custom Auto Balance modifier that calculates the center of mass of the ornament and automatically positions the hanging hole to help the truck hang level.

You can see the difference in the comparison image. A centered hole causes the truck to tilt, while the balanced placement keeps it level.

A Note About Balance

The Auto Balance modifier calculates the center of mass based on the 2D shape, assuming a uniform material with consistent thickness.

For a single piece of wood or acrylic, this provides a useful estimate of the balance point. Adding extra layers, decorations, or materials with different weights may affect how the finished ornament hangs.
