This box has a lid that swings on the built in hinges. Customize the dimensions, material thickness, and sizing.

How to Use

  1. Set the dimensions (width, depth, and height) of your desired box.

  2. Set the materialThickness based on the material you're cutting. This will determine the height of the finger joints.

  3. Set the kerf to compensate for the kerf of your cutter. A value of 0.007" is usually good for tight-fitting laser-cut finger joints, but you'll need to adjust this depending on your material, material thickness, and cutter.

  4. Optional: adjust the tabWidth if you want your finger joint tabs to be bigger or smaller.

  5. Optional: adjust the fingerHoldWidth if you want the hold that helps you open the lid to be bigger or smaller.

  6. Optional: adjust the fingerHoldOverhang if you want the finger hold to stick out a bit further from the front of the box. In practice a very small amount is necessary for your finger to catch onto this tab.

Assembly

Press-fit all the finger jointed pieces together except for one side.

Add the lid, inserting the pin into the hole. Then add the final side, which will lock the lid in place.

The finger joints will slot into each other with a tight fit. You may need to use a rubber mallet to tap them in.

I need help ASAP. I put in the dimensions I need for the box, however, it didn't come out right for some reason. I need a box that's 10.5 wide x 7.5 height and 3 inches deep. However, when I put those parameters in, the lid didn't resisze in proportion. It only came out 10.5 x about 2 inches. I didn't notice until I cut everything and tried to put it together. Nothing is the right proportion! I couldn't see how to adjust each piece separately. I thought if I put in the dimensions it would change each piece accordingly.

cant get that tight snug fit.my material is .118 i changed kerf to 0.010 to try to get tigthen fit .What do i need to change to make it snug? i did no kerf . what am i missing and not changing correctly?

It sounds like you have the right idea as bigger kerf gives you a more tight fit. Have you tried using the tester to find different values? This can save you some material Finger-Joints-Kerf-Tes…

I can't thank you enough for this Hinged Lid Box (laser-cutting) template! It is a joy to work with and is so precise. The attached images show one example of how I'm using it, and this box has not even been glued together yet. Thanks times a million. :-)

As an avid home-brewer, I was able to adapt this project to create a more portable kegerator to accommodate a typical 5-gallon corny keg. For this project, I utilized the pass-thru slot of my GlowForge Pro. Careful consideration went into how and where to place finger joints, internal insulation and water-proofing and accommodate the relative heavy nature of a full keg of beer. It's been the hit of many beer pouring events. :-)
