## Jig Cut

## How to Use

### 1\. Cut the Jig

Start by downloading the **Jig Cut** file and cut it out of your preferred material. We recommend 1/8" thick MDF. Be sure to [score](https://cuttle.xyz/learn/how-to-score-on-a-laser-cutter) the arrow that marks the top left corner of the jig. As a default the jig will have 12 pencils slots but you can choose any number of slots inside the `Jig Settings` folder.

### 2\. Make an SVG with your custom text

Type the text you would like to engrave in the `text` field, choose your font or other settings, and download the SVG file.

### 3\. Register the jig

Place masking tape in the top left corner of your laser bed.

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/e73df36ba93840f071dd1c47cad36aed803cf5c402413f2b5c9a71c55ec75818.jpg?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

Load the SVG from step 2 into your laser cutting software.

You’ll see two things: the corner cut (for registering the jig) and your text (to be engraved or scored onto the pencils)

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/c3c7aa13a6b159f38470b301a6c119307c9edef52e71bcd3be6ce8509fa012fb.png?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

Set the text to “Ignore” and the corner cut to a very light cut setting to cut through the tape.

We used these settings:

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/c3618ea135633ab6545d8f816c0fb9c518c71f1312210f7b52683831eb773f1f.png?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

Cut the tape, then peel it and gently push the jig into the registered corner.

### 4\. Load the Pencils

The erasers should be on the right side. With hexagonal pencils make sure they are laying flat.

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/11d6a9581d3e5238a521c144eb43953762755d8ccdf7a9978d208f42dcc1b14e.jpg?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

### 5\. Engrave or Score the Pencils

In your laser software, set the corner cut to “Ignore” and set the text to “Engrave” or “Score” depending on what kind of font you’re using. (Single Line Fonts should be scored.)

For engraving, these Glowforge settings work well:

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/21dc478decc195eb6b8c18de6b9d1dcbc2905fa3cc2e277de58db41d13e2a9e0.png?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

For scoring:

![](https://cuttle-uploads.imgix.net/56/d4226d8598c9e35b5448a4c28ca743da7c4270141351ade854b68fbafbfb7078.png?auto=compress,format&q=80&fit=max&width=700&height=1280&dpr=1)

For both, **make sure to set the focus height to Manual with a height of 0.267 in** (the height of a pencil).

### 6\. Optional: For black pencils, apply Rub n Buff

You can make the text stand out on black pencils by applying [Rub'n Buff](https://amzn.to/437Wj2v).

Apply a very small amount. Scrape off excess. Then wipe off excess with a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol.

Yes, this is a fair warning. Looking at the Material Safety Data sheet it looks like the main issue (after the solvents evaporate) is contact with the metallic stains. One way to deal with it is to put some topcoat like lacquer or shellac. But even then it will not be appropriate for kid's items. So yes, definitely don't use it if there is any likelihood of children or anyone else putting it in their mouth. You can use the bamboo pens for this jig

June 9 at 2:12 PM

[Joanie Zangerle](https://cuttle.xyz/@joaniezang)

I followed all the steps above for bamboo pens, but the font isn't lining up, and I am wasting pens. The jig and the font SVGs aren't the same size. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I looked up the focus height for the bambo pen, .43 and it worked!
