### About This Template

The finished engraving design measures approximately:

**3.75 inches wide × 3.25 inches high**

This design is intended to be engraved on one side of the glass. It does not wrap around the full circumference, so no circumference test is required.

The template was designed for a standard 16 oz pint glass approximately 5.75 inches tall. Pint glasses may vary slightly by manufacturer, so confirm that the finished design fits comfortably within the engraving area of your glass before engraving.

### What You Will Need

-   One standard 16 oz tapered pint glass
    
-   A laser engraver with a rotary attachment
    
-   Masking tape or another method for marking the center of the engraving area
    
-   A ruler or measuring tape
    
-   Your preferred glass-cleaning supplies
    
-   Appropriate safety equipment for your laser
    

Before engraving, confirm that your glass is free from chips, cracks, or other damage. Clean and dry the engraving area thoroughly so the glass sits securely in the rotary and the design can be positioned accurately.

### Personalize the Design

Use the controls in the template to customize the crest:

1.  **Initial**  
    Enter one letter. The initial will automatically fit within the center of the botanical frame.
    
2.  **Choose an Initial Style**  
    Select your preferred decorative font from the available options. Because letters vary in shape, some initials may appear wider or narrower than others.
    
3.  **Name**  
    Enter the first name, surname, or short word you would like engraved beneath the crest. Longer names will automatically reduce in size to fit the available space.
    
4.  **Choose a Botanical Frame**  
    Select one of the three botanical frame designs. Only the chosen frame will appear in the downloaded file.
    

Review the completed design carefully before downloading. Make sure the initial and name are spelled correctly and that the selected frame works well with the chosen letter.

### Download the Design

Once you are satisfied with the personalization:

1.  Click **Download**.
    
2.  Choose **SVG** as the file type.
    
3.  Open the SVG in your laser software.
    
4.  Confirm that the imported design measures approximately:

The downloaded file should contain only the selected botanical frame, initial, and name.

Do not resize the design unless you have confirmed that the new size will fit the usable engraving area of your glass.

### Set Up the Glass and Rotary

1.  Install and prepare your rotary attachment according to the instructions for your laser.
    
2.  Place the pint glass in the rotary with the opening and base supported securely.
    
3.  Adjust the rotary so the glass rotates smoothly without slipping or wobbling.
    
4.  Level the glass so the engraving area remains at a consistent height as it turns.
    
5.  Mark the horizontal and vertical center of the engraving area with masking tape, if helpful.
    
6.  Position the center of the design over the center mark.
    
7.  Focus the laser at approximately the center of the engraving area.
    

Because this is a front-facing design rather than a full wrap, you do not need to test whether the engraving meets around the circumference. The rotary still needs to be set correctly for the glass so the design engraves at the proper width.

### Test and Engrave

Before engraving the finished glass:

1.  Confirm that the design is centered and positioned at the desired height.
    
2.  Use your laser software’s outline, frame, or boundary function to check the engraving area.
    
3.  Make sure the laser head will not travel beyond the usable area of the glass.
    
4.  Use glass engraving settings recommended for your laser and the type of glass you are using.
    
5.  Run a test on a spare glass whenever possible, especially when using an unfamiliar glass or new laser settings.
    
6.  Engrave the design.
    

After engraving, allow the glass to cool before removing it from the rotary. Clean away any residue according to your usual glass-engraving process.

### Important Notes

-   This template is designed for a standard 16 oz tapered pint glass, but glass dimensions may vary slightly by manufacturer.
    
-   Your rotary must still be calibrated correctly so the design does not engrave too wide or too narrow.
    
-   Laser settings vary by machine and glass type. Use settings appropriate for your equipment and test when possible.
    
-   Glass can crack or break during engraving. Never use damaged glass, and always follow the safety guidance for your laser.
    

### Tips for Engraving Glass

Everyone develops a preferred method for engraving glass, and results can vary depending on the laser, settings, and glass itself. When engraving glass for the first time, test a few different methods to see which produces the cleanest result with your machine.

-   Some users apply a thin film of **dish soap** over the engraving area before engraving.
    
-   Others place a layer of **wet newspaper** over the glass. The moisture may help keep the glass cooler and reduce fracturing.
    
-   Another method is to **slightly defocus the laser**. Defocusing by approximately **0.15 inch** may produce a smoother result with less surface fracturing. This is the method I prefer.
    
-   After engraving, handle the glass carefully. Tiny glass shards can remain around the edges of the engraved area.
    
-   While washing the glass, gently rub a **Scotch-Brite pad** over the engraving to help remove loose glass particles. Wear appropriate hand protection and rinse the glass thoroughly.
    
-   Inexpensive glasses often engrave surprisingly well. Basic pint glasses from a dollar store may produce better results than more expensive glassware, and they are affordable enough for testing and replacing if an engraving does not turn out as planned.
    

Because lasers and glass formulations vary, try the dish-soap, wet-newspaper, and slight-defocus methods on inexpensive test glasses before deciding which technique works best for your setup.

### Rotary Attachment Notes

Rotary attachments vary by manufacturer, machine, and laser software. This template was tested using a **Trotec cone-style rotary attachment**, but it may also be used with other rotary systems when they are properly configured.

The two most common general styles are:

**Chuck, cone, or clamp-style rotary**  
The object is held at one or both ends and rotated around a fixed axis. These systems generally hold the object securely and are often a good choice for tapered glasses, handled mugs, or items that might slip on rollers.

**Roller-style rotary**  
The object rests on driven rollers that turn the outside surface. Roller systems are convenient for straight, evenly shaped objects, but tapered, lightweight, or slippery items may wander or slip during engraving. LightBurn notes that roller rotaries work best with cylindrical objects and can be more difficult to calibrate for full-wrap engraving, while chuck systems physically hold the item and rotate it around a known axis.

Some manufacturers also offer tilting, interchangeable, or combination systems. Trotec, for example, offers cone, roller, tiltable, and combined rotary configurations for different object shapes and sizes.

Before engraving:

-   Choose the correct rotary type in your laser software, when that setting is available.
    
-   Enter the measurements and calibration values required by your particular rotary.
    
-   Follow the rotary manufacturer’s instructions for steps per rotation, roller diameter, object diameter, or circumference.
    
-   Make sure the object rotates smoothly without slipping, wobbling, or moving sideways.
    
-   Use your laser software’s frame or outline function to check placement before engraving.
    

Rotary terminology and required measurements differ between systems. For example, LightBurn distinguishes between chuck and roller rotaries and notes that steps per revolution refer to a full rotation of the chuck on a chuck system, but a full rotation of the driven roller—not the object—on a roller system.

## Useful troubleshooting tips by rotary style

### If using a roller rotary

These are reasonable practical suggestions:

-   Place nonslip shelf liner, silicone bands, or rubber bands where appropriate to improve traction.
    
-   Add weight inside a lightweight tumbler, provided it can be secured and does not strain the rotary.
    
-   Use a support wheel or steady rest at the unsupported end.
    
-   Make sure seams, handles, ridges, and flared rims do not pass over the drive rollers.
    
-   Watch for gradual sideways movement during a test rotation.
    
-   Clean dust and residue from both the glass and rollers.
    

However, I would call these **possible aids**, not guaranteed fixes. Added grip or weight can also change how an object tracks or increase the load on the motor.

### If using a chuck or cone rotary

-   Protect delicate glass from excessive clamping pressure.
    
-   Make sure the object is centered and held squarely.
    
-   Support the free end so its weight does not pull the object off-axis.
    
-   Confirm that the chuck, cone, or plug cannot loosen during repeated rotation.
    
-   For open glasses, a cone generally centers the opening well, but unusually shaped rims may need a custom insert or jig.
    

### If engraving a tapered object

Regardless of rotary style:

-   Level the engraving surface so it stays as parallel as possible to the laser’s travel.
    
-   Focus near the center of the engraving area.
    
-   Expect some variation when the circumference changes substantially across a tall design.
    
-   Use a narrow design or test piece before committing to a large full wrap.
    
-   On a roller rotary, taper may cause the object to “walk” sideways; stops or supports may help, but they must not prevent free rotation.
    

## Which rotary is “best”?

-   **Roller rotary:** easiest and often least expensive for straight, uniform cylinders.
    
-   **Chuck or cone rotary:** usually more secure for taper, irregular shapes, and full wraps.
    
-   **Tilting rotary:** helpful when the engraving surface must be leveled on tapered objects.
    
-   **Custom jig or insert:** sometimes necessary for unusual rims, narrow openings, handles, or fragile pieces.
    

The best rotary is the one that securely holds the particular blank, rotates it consistently, and works correctly with the user’s laser and software.
