# Personalized Floral Tapered Tumbler Engraving

Create a personalized floral engraving for a 20 oz tapered, handleless tumbler. Enter the recipient’s name, choose from the recommended script fonts, and adjust the design width using the tumbler’s measured circumference.

The floral artwork forms a decorative border around the bottom of the engraving area, while the name is automatically resized to fit neatly within the space above it.

This template also includes a separate circumference test strip to help verify your rotary setup before engraving the finished tumbler.

Tumbler dimensions and taper can vary between manufacturers. Measure your own tumbler as described in the instructions rather than relying only on the advertised ounce capacity.

These instructions describe the general workflow used during testing. Rotary setup, measurement entry, orientation, and calibration vary by machine and software, so follow the instructions supplied with your own rotary attachment.

## What You’ll Need

-   A 20 oz tapered tumbler without a handle
    
-   A laser engraver with a rotary attachment
    
-   Low-tack tape, such as blue painter’s tape
    
-   A flexible measuring tape
    
-   The included circumference test strip
    
-   Your usual tumbler-cleaning supplies
    

Before engraving, make sure the tumbler is clean, dry, and securely positioned in the rotary.

For best results, use a tumbler similar in shape to the one shown in the template examples. This design has not been tested on handled 40 oz tumblers or other substantially different tumbler styles.

## Measure the Tumbler

1.  Decide where the vertical center of the finished engraving will sit on the tumbler.
    
2.  Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the tumbler at that exact height.
    
3.  Keep the tape level and snug, but do not pull it tight enough to distort the measurement.
    
4.  Enter that measurement into **Circumference at Design Center**.
    

Because tapered tumblers are wider at the top than at the bottom, measuring at the center of the design gives the best single circumference value for setting up the rotary.

Do not measure only at the top or bottom of the tumbler. This template uses one circumference measurement, taken through the center of the engraving area.

## Personalize the Design

1.  Enter the recipient’s name in the **Name** field.
    
2.  Choose a font from the **Font Choice** menu.
    
3.  Review the name in the design before exporting.
    

The name is set to fit automatically within its text area. Longer names will become smaller so they remain inside the available space.

Check especially for:

-   long names
    
-   capital letters with large flourishes
    
-   letters with descenders, such as **g**, **j**, **p**, **q**, and **y**
    
-   script letters that may touch or overlap
    

Choose another recommended font when needed for better readability or spacing.

## Export and Use the Test Strip

Before engraving the full design, use the included test strip to check the circumference measurement and rotary setup.

1.  Open the test-strip component.
    
2.  Confirm that it uses the current **Circumference at Design Center** value.
    
3.  Export the test strip as an SVG.
    
4.  Import it into your laser software without resizing it.
    
5.  Enter the same circumference value in your rotary settings.
    
6.  Run the test strip at the height where the center of the finished engraving will sit.
    
7.  Check whether the two end registration marks meet.
    

If the marks leave a gap or overlap, adjust the circumference value slightly and repeat the test.

Once the ends meet correctly:

1.  Record the corrected circumference.
    
2.  Enter that corrected value in **Circumference at Design Center** in Cuttle.
    
3.  Enter the same corrected value in your laser rotary settings.
    
4.  Re-export the final tumbler design.
    

> The circumference value in Cuttle and the circumference value in the laser software should match.

One subtle point: because changing the circumference in Cuttle also changes the test strip’s width, each new test should be exported again after changing the value. That way the strip width and rotary setting remain based on the same number.

## Export the Final Design

After confirming the rotary setup with the test strip:

1.  Return to the tumbler-design component.
    
2.  Confirm the name, font, and **Circumference at Design Center** measurement.
    
3.  Export the finished design as an **SVG**.
    
4.  Import it into your laser software without resizing it.
    
5.  Verify that the file width matches the entered circumference measurement.
    

Turn off settings such as **Fit to Page**, **Scale to Fit**, or automatic resizing. The design must remain at its exported size for the circumference calibration to stay accurate.

## Set Up the Tumbler in the Rotary

1.  Place the tumbler securely in the rotary attachment.
    
2.  Level the tumbler so the top and bottom edges are on the same horizontal plane.
    
3.  Position the center of the engraving area beneath the laser.
    
4.  Focus the laser at the vertical center of the design.
    
5.  Enter the corrected circumference value in the rotary settings.
    
6.  Import the final SVG without resizing it.
    
7.  Align the design so its center matches the location where the circumference was measured.
    

Because the tumbler is tapered, the laser may not stay at exactly the same focal distance across the entire height of the design. Focusing at the center helps balance the difference between the upper and lower portions.

Make sure the tumbler rotates freely and that the silver rim, lower ridge, or any raised areas do not interfere with the rotary or laser bed.

## Engrave the Final Design

1.  Confirm that the tumbler is secure, level, and focused.
    
2.  Double-check the name and selected font.
    
3.  Verify that the imported design has not been resized.
    
4.  Confirm that the design width matches the corrected circumference.
    
5.  Use engraving settings appropriate for your tumbler coating and laser.
    
6.  Start the engraving and monitor the first part of the job.
    

After engraving, clean the tumbler using the method recommended for its coating.

Because coatings, laser wattages, lenses, and rotary attachments vary, this template does not include universal power and speed settings. Test your settings on a spare tumbler or inconspicuous area whenever possible.

## Important Notes

-   This template was designed and tested for a **20 oz tapered tumbler without a handle**.
    
-   Tumbler sizes and shapes vary by manufacturer, so always measure your actual tumbler.
    
-   The **Circumference at Design Center** value in Cuttle should match the circumference used in your rotary settings.
    
-   Do not resize the exported SVG in your laser software.
    
-   The included test strip checks circumference and rotary calibration; it does not replace testing your engraving settings.
    
-   Other tumbler styles, including handled 40 oz tumblers, have not been tested with this template.
    

### Rotary Attachment Notes

Rotary attachments vary by manufacturer, machine, and laser software. This template was tested using a **Trotec cone-style rotary attachment**, but it may also be used with other rotary systems when they are properly configured.

The two most common general styles are:

**Chuck, cone, or clamp-style rotary**  
The object is held at one or both ends and rotated around a fixed axis. These systems generally hold the object securely and are often a good choice for tapered glasses, handled mugs, or items that might slip on rollers.

**Roller-style rotary**  
The object rests on driven rollers that turn the outside surface. Roller systems are convenient for straight, evenly shaped objects, but tapered, lightweight, or slippery items may wander or slip during engraving. LightBurn notes that roller rotaries work best with cylindrical objects and can be more difficult to calibrate for full-wrap engraving, while chuck systems physically hold the item and rotate it around a known axis.

Some manufacturers also offer tilting, interchangeable, or combination systems. Trotec, for example, offers cone, roller, tiltable, and combined rotary configurations for different object shapes and sizes.

Before engraving:

-   Choose the correct rotary type in your laser software, when that setting is available.
    
-   Enter the measurements and calibration values required by your particular rotary.
    
-   Follow the rotary manufacturer’s instructions for steps per rotation, roller diameter, object diameter, or circumference.
    
-   Make sure the object rotates smoothly without slipping, wobbling, or moving sideways.
    
-   Use your laser software’s frame or outline function to check placement before engraving.
    

Rotary terminology and required measurements differ between systems. For example, LightBurn distinguishes between chuck and roller rotaries and notes that steps per revolution refer to a full rotation of the chuck on a chuck system, but a full rotation of the driven roller—not the object—on a roller system.

## Useful troubleshooting tips by rotary style

### If using a roller rotary

These are reasonable practical suggestions:

-   Place nonslip shelf liner, silicone bands, or rubber bands where appropriate to improve traction.
    
-   Add weight inside a lightweight tumbler, provided it can be secured and does not strain the rotary.
    
-   Use a support wheel or steady rest at the unsupported end.
    
-   Make sure seams, handles, ridges, and flared rims do not pass over the drive rollers.
    
-   Watch for gradual sideways movement during a test rotation.
    
-   Clean dust and residue from both the glass and rollers.
    

However, I would call these **possible aids**, not guaranteed fixes. Added grip or weight can also change how an object tracks or increase the load on the motor.

### If using a chuck or cone rotary

-   Protect delicate glass from excessive clamping pressure.
    
-   Make sure the object is centered and held squarely.
    
-   Support the free end so its weight does not pull the object off-axis.
    
-   Confirm that the chuck, cone, or plug cannot loosen during repeated rotation.
    
-   For open glasses, a cone generally centers the opening well, but unusually shaped rims may need a custom insert or jig.
    

### If engraving a tapered object

Regardless of rotary style:

-   Level the engraving surface so it stays as parallel as possible to the laser’s travel.
    
-   Focus near the center of the engraving area.
    
-   Expect some variation when the circumference changes substantially across a tall design.
    
-   Use a narrow design or test piece before committing to a large full wrap.
    
-   On a roller rotary, taper may cause the object to “walk” sideways; stops or supports may help, but they must not prevent free rotation.
    

## Which rotary is “best”?

-   **Roller rotary:** easiest and often least expensive for straight, uniform cylinders.
    
-   **Chuck or cone rotary:** usually more secure for taper, irregular shapes, and full wraps.
    
-   **Tilting rotary:** helpful when the engraving surface must be leveled on tapered objects.
    
-   **Custom jig or insert:** sometimes necessary for unusual rims, narrow openings, handles, or fragile pieces.
    

The best rotary is the one that securely holds the particular blank, rotates it consistently, and works correctly with the user’s laser and software.
