# Using Cuttle with LightBurn

[YouTube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0lu3AG5prs)

[LightBurn](https://lightburnsoftware.com/) is a software application that can control many different brands of laser cutters.

SVG cut files that you download from Cuttle are compatible with LightBurn and many Cuttle members use LightBurn in their workflow.

In this tutorial, we will:

1. Personalize and download an SVG cut file from Cuttle
2. Import the SVG file into LightBurn
3. Configure the cut, score, and engrave settings in LightBurn
4. Cut multiple pieces in LightBurn

## 1\. Personalize and download an SVG cut file from Cuttle

1. Choose any [Cuttle template](https://cuttle.xyz/templates) to personalize. For this tutorial we’ll be using the [Dog Bone Ornament](https://cuttle.xyz/@cuttle/Dog-Bone-Ornament-cXwOVGL9s9IY) template.
2. Personalize by typing text and choosing options.
3. Click **Download SVG** to download the SVG file to your computer.

This design has 3 operations that we will need to assign in LightBurn. Each operation is a different color. By convention, red is cut, blue is score, and black is engrave.

## 2\. Import the SVG file into LightBurn

1. In the LightBurn application, go to **File > Import**
2. Select the SVG file you downloaded from Cuttle

💡

LightBurn now has a direct Cuttle integration. If you’d like to use Cuttle directly within LightBurn and skip the step of downloading and importing SVG files, see the section below on that!

## 3\. Configure the cut, score, and engrave settings in LightBurn

1. We want red to _**cut**_. In the Cuts / Layers panel, set the red layer’s Mode to **Line**. Enter Speed and Power settings for cutting your material.
2. We want blue to _**score**_. Set the blue layer’s Mode to **Line**. Enter Speed and Power settings for scoring your material. Remember: scoring is just like cutting except at low enough power (and/or high enough speed) that the laser does not cut all the way through your material but instead just leaves a visible line.
3. We want black to _**engrave**_. Set the black layer’s Mode to **Fill**. Enter appropriate Speed and Power settings. Remember: engraving is when the laser moves back and forth to burn out a filled area of your design.

We recommend looking at LightBurn’s official Get Started documentation for [Colors and Layers](https://docs.lightburnsoftware.com/latest/GetStarted/ColorsAndLayers/) to learn more about Line vs Fill mode, and [Cut Settings](https://docs.lightburnsoftware.com/latest/GetStarted/CutSettingsBeginner/) to learn more about adjusting the Speed and Power settings. Each material will need different speed and power settings. Consult your laser manufacturer for recommendations.

### Troubleshooting: Open shapes skipped

This error occurs when you have a scoring layer set to Fill mode instead of Line mode. Click Cancel to close the error box, and set any score operations to **Line**.

## 4\. Cut multiple pieces in LightBurn

Since this design has two pieces, a front piece and a backer, you’ll likely want to cut each piece separately.

1. Select the design by clicking on it
2. Do **Arrange > Ungroup** to separate the design into its two separate pieces
3. Select the piece you don’t want to cut by clicking on it, then drag it off of the canvas
4. You’re now ready to cut the first piece
5. When you’re done, move that piece off of the canvas and move the other piece onto the canvas to cut that piece

If you’re new to operating your laser with LightBurn, we recommend reviewing LightBurn’s official Get Started documentation, starting with [Previewing](https://docs.lightburnsoftware.com/latest/GetStarted/PreviewBeginner/).

## Using Cuttle directly within LightBurn

Starting in LightBurn version 2.1, you can use Cuttle _directly_ within LightBurn, meaning you don’t need to download SVG files to get your designs from Cuttle into LightBurn.

If you don’t see the Web Tools menu, make sure you’re on the latest version of LightBurn. Go to **Help > Check for Updates** to see what version you’re on. The Web Tools menu was added in version 2.1.

Once your design is on the canvas, you can set the mode, speed, and power settings for your material and you’re ready to cut!
